Description
New apple trees are not grown from pips (what they produce is random so doesn’t often give you good apples) but instead new shoots from an existing tree are grafted onto existing rootstocks. The type of rootstock determines the eventual size of the tree.
In this workshopwe we’ll talk about how grafting works and then you will learn to make a new apple tree from a rootstock and a scion cut from an existing tree. We will use the dwarfing M27 rootstock, so that you will have a tree which can live in a large pot long-term, and so is suitable for a patio or even a balcony. M27-rooted trees crop as well as larger ones but are much easier to fit into a small garden. Once you have grafted your scion to the rootstock we will explain how to care for the tree and send you home with a sheet of instructions.
We will provide the rootstocks and all the tools. We will take scions from the heritage apple trees in Sneinton Market, though we will also have some alternatives if you would prefer these. Just come along and bring a headtorch if you have one, plus a bag so that you can transport your tree to it’s new home.
